I’ve written before about this very same problem. And you’re echoing most of what I thought and raise some additional interesting points.
The concept is not new and I think it’s worth pursuing it. The practical problem I’ve seen while trying to bridge this gap is that we’re looking for a position that has got a very good experience in both design and engineering which right now is hard to find.
Currently we have very good UX/UI designers and very good UI/Front-end developers. The result of this is that the risk might be that we get a person that doesn’t have enough of this knowledge packed into his own experience. This happened with DevOPS as well, and took a while before the position was consolidated.
Just my 2¢.
