Your Green Book to screening all of the 2019 Oscar nominated films

As a lifelong maker of bad bets, the Oscars have been the holy grail of L’s for my childhood. I have always attempted to see every film released before the show so I could have a hot take for my Letterboxd account. This year is the first year that this dream will be possible. Mostly because I’m bored and I have nothing better to do.

A note on screeners: I’ve taken the time to look for almost every legal method of screening these films. Now, due to the intricacies of distrobution and the possibility of every person being able to access films from whatever there location not being feasible. I offer the mention of the screeners that are avaliable. I encourage everyone to take the time to seek these films out in there local area in a way that supports the filmmakers.

The Big Films

These films incldue Best Picture and the larger Hollywood releases. For the most part, these films are avaliable through VOD or are on Netflix.

Roma (2018)

This film is avaliable on Netflix and is screening in select theatres. Now since Roma is nominated for Best Picture and Best Foreign Picture. I feel obligated to place all of my information about the Foreign Picture Nominees here too. Only Shoplifters has a screener avalible at the moment (there is a note above on those) and Never Look Away, Cold War and Capernaum are screening in select locations and have no upcoming VOD date.

A Star is Born (2018)

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

The Favourite (2018)

This film is still avaliable in theatres and there is also a screener avaliable. You know the drill about screeners.

Vice (2018)

This film is still avaliable in theatres and there is also a screener avalaible.

If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)

This film is still in theatres and there is a screener available.

Can You Ever Forgive Me (2018)

I was really excited to see this film in theatres when I saw the trailers during screening all the way at the beginning of the year. Distribution for the film has been really weird. In some places it will gain some sort of theatrical release on Febuary 1st. In Toronto, it’s playing at a few smaller theatres in the city. Yet, it might be easier and cheaper to just get on VOD on the 5th of February.

UPDATE: There is a online screener avalible for this film now.

Isle of Dogs (2018)

This film is a total delight and has been available on VOD for a few months now. I would recommend you check it out If you love dogs or have a kid.

Mary Poppin’s Returns (2018)

This film is still finishing ups its current theatrical run and you will probably be able to catch it at your local matinee theatre.

First Man (2018)

My (unofficial) favourite film of the year has been on VOD for the past month. I really recommend that you check it out on the biggest screen possible if its still playing in your city.

A Quiet Place (2018)

This film is avaliable on VOD and Netflix.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

This film is avaliable on Netflix.

Mirai (2018)

This film is still in select theatres and there are screeners floating around online.

The Shorts: Docs and Live Action Films

It’s incredibly biased of me to consider the rest of these films as a seperate category but these are the films that required a lot more research to figure out if there was a screening avaliable for them.

Animated, Live Action and Documentary Shorts

For the most part, the animated films are avaliable online through links to other sites. Weekends, Late Afternoon and One Small Step are avaliable for free through these links. While Bao is avaliable for rental through YouTube and the Incredibles DVD. The only exception is Animal Behaviour, which used to be avaliable for free but is now nowhere to be found. I’m personally blaming the anarchaic structure of the NFB for this.

The live action shorts are a lot harder to find than the animated films. Fauve and Marguerite have links avaliable online while Detainment, Mother and Skin don’t have online links but will be screening around the world at art house cinemas near you through the Shorts.TV screenings happening on Feburay 9th. Link is avaliable here.

Documentary Shorts are also a little harder to find. A Night at the Garden and Black Sheep have free links avaliable online while End Game is avaliable on Netflix for streaming. The remainder being Lifeboat, Period. End of Sentence and Border have no avaliable links at the moment.

UPDATE 2/04/18 : Lifeboat is now streaming on YouTube for free.

Full Length Documentary

These films are also a toss up in my oppinion. RBG and Free Solo are both avaliable on VOD while Fathers and Sons is avaliable on Kanopy (check your local library or post secondary instution if they offer it.) Hale County This Morning, This Evening and Minding the Gap are both still having screenings in certain locations.

UPDATE 2/5/2018: Hale County This Morning, This Evening is now on Kanopy. Also Minding the Gap has a screener avaliable.
