Consciously Unconscious

From the outside looking in, people are quick to think, but lack the knowledge to learn and to know. Throughout my life, my name I’maiya-Milan has carried a sense of divine creativity. Delicate, to the point that due to the complexity of its pronounciation, only bliss ignornance ignores the chance to comprehend and understand. The same ignornance lacking the concern of how to pronounce my name because it sounds too “ethnic”, doesn’t differ from those who are misunderstood due to their cultural identities. Today, we have several news outlets that create their own idealistic conclusion about the well being of other nations. To truly understand a specific culture and its location, taking the time out to explore different ethnic news outlets is crucial. Ethnic Media is a voice for minorities, which can only be successfully told by evaluating the new world, inviting arrivals, and representing “America”. Dating back to the 1800s, Abraham Lincoln’s presidency became one of the first to be known for considering the involvement of an immigrant electorate. The article ‘One Nation with News for All’, became an outlet created by and for minorities. Within in the past and currently, covering news that caters to minorites has been looked down upon as un-American. Providing a parallel in another language for those who are unfamiliar with the Eurocentric society that mainly focuses on the needs of Americans, helps foreigners navigate and connect with others like them. The article, “ A Parallel Chinese- language Internet Helps Immigrants Navigate Life in America”, furthers the distinction of a parallel and ethnic media working hand and hand to help navigate arrivals who want to understand a culture other than their own. As a broadcast journalist, it is fundamental to understand how America was built off immigration and migration and where it stands today within all communities. Hence, it is important to stay aware of how minorities navigate not just locally or nationally, but also globally. Taking the time out to expand knowledge on a culture that is not of your own creates an even more remarkable individual and storyteller. Journalist are watchdogs that tell stories, thus knowing all angles establishes a very marketable journalist aside from the mainstream media.

A Look Within

Ethnic news outlets like LA Watts Times, British Weekly, and Michu Magazine are all outlets that cover three different worldview perspectives, including the diversity within the Afrocentric, European, and Asian worldview. These outlets differ from mainstream outlets because they focus more specifically on hard to reach and ethnic communities who can be involved, whereas mainstream focuses on expertise, context, and resources. Mainstream outlets have a narrow view toward immigrant communities, while ethnic outlets produce and create to target and connect ethnic and indigenous communities.
