Ventura County added 265 new COVID-19 cases and one new death on Friday, according to public health data.

The new cases push Ventura County over the 16,000-case mark, bringing the county to a total of 16,029 cases. The county recorded 981 new cases within the past week alone.

Friday’s death was in a 36-year-old woman who had contributing health issues, county officials confirmed. The death toll for the county now stands at 172.

Among nonfatal cases, Ventura County currently has 1,309 active cases under quarantine while 14,548 have recovered from the coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19.The number of hospitalized COVID-positive cases remained the same at 36 people on Friday. However, the number of patients receiving treatment within intensive care units doubled, from five on Thursday to 10 on Friday.

Friday’s new cases were among the results of 1,665 people recently tested, bringing the total number of people tested to 233,789.

Public health officials tracking the spread of the virus have found 17 cases were caused during travel, 5,268 were acquired through contact with another infected person, 2,926 were transmitted in the community and 1,194 are under investigation. Investigators were unable to determine the cause of the virus in at least 6,624 local cases, officials said Friday.

Among the three health metrics measured by the state to determine a county’s reopening tier, Ventura County had two metrics qualify for the orange “moderate” tier and one for the purple “substantial” tier. Metrics are updated each Tuesday and account for the previous week.

This week, the two metrics qualifying for the orange tier were the test positivity rate of 3.0% and the “health equity” positivity rate of 4.8%. The health equity metric measures the test positivity rate of residents within the areas in the bottom 25% of the California Healthy Places Index to ensure it is not significantly disproportionate from the countywide positivity rate.

The metric within the purple tier was the average daily case rate of 62 new cases per day. To avoid qualifying for the purple tier, Ventura County will have to average no more than 60 new cases a day.

Oxnard, the county’s largest city, continues to have the highest number of confirmed cases with 6,326 residents testing positive as of Friday. Simi Valley had the next highest number with 2,310 infections detected. The two cities account for over half of all cases recorded in the county.

The number of cases in other areas, listed in descending order, are: Ventura, 1,722; Thousand Oaks at 1,533 cases, including 459 in Newbury Park; Santa Paula, 1,051; Camarillo, 833; Fillmore, 622; Moorpark, 618; Port Hueneme, 479; Ojai, 160; Oak Park, 109; Piru, 108; Oak View, 88; Somis, 66; and Bell Canyon, four.
