One of the taxes we pay as human beings is living under pressure, whether it’s a pressure from our social traditions or pressure from people in our circles. Though we were born free and we are expected to practice our freedom of choice, many of us have to defend their choices especially when they aren’t following the crowd. During this summer vacation, unfortunately, I was put under remarkable social pressure. Deciding to follow my daily routine of waking up early and working on my passion during my annual break wasn’t warmly welcomed by others. And though my little family encouraged me to keep my rituals, people from larger circles put pressure on me to give up the habits I persisted for many months to adopt. “Common sense doesn’t mean common practice”, I have read and it’s so true. Though it’s common sense that we mind our own business, many of us don’t.
I believe that one of the things we need to learn as social creatures is to stop interfering in other people’s lives. We need to remember that people were born free and loving them isn’t an excuse to invade their privacy and shape their lives. We need to give others the freedom in the following aspects:
1- Time.
People are free to spend their time the way they like.
2- Dress.
People are free to cover or uncover as long as they aren’t breaking clear rules of places or ethical codes of customs.
3- Food.
People are free to follow their own diets.
4- Money.
People are free to spend their money the way they like, it’s their money.
5- Activities.
People are free to join or drop the activities they dislike.
6- Sleep.
People are free to sleep as long as they need and at the time they prefer.
7- Study.
People are free to study in the fields of their choice.
8- Work.
People are free to select the work they like no matter how others perceive it or undervalue it.
Though the aspects above seem so natural, unfortunately many of us, driven by love and concern, tend to practice pressure on our beloved ones. We ought to give others more freedom and more space to live their lives with less pressure.
