A Modern Coliseum Called YouTube

Many articles I read about people comparing themselves to the Romans and other cruel people in the past. As you can guess those who wrote the articles patted us on the back and assured that we are more humane than any of those barbarians. Are we?

The coliseum is now nothing but over-praised ruins, but the traits of the barbarians of the past somehow is visible in some modern people. In the old days you had to go and witness gruesome activities yourself, by going to coliseum or such places. Now you only have to go to YouTube.

YouTube is one messed-up place where cookery videos are sitting side-by-side with murder videos. It is a normal thing to see a link from Twitter saying “Watch 20 people die, warning: very graphic”. People who did it, spread it and watched it are equally despicable. Whatever excuse they have cannot be justified, as it doesn’t help their cause at all by trying to make us watch heartbreaking scenes of some unfortunate people losing their lives.

Is it fair to oppress people with such cruelty? Giving them links to gory videos? Supposed the lifeless bodies shown in the videos were their relatives or friends, would they watch them? Or is it because they are just strangers so that makes it all right? If they think like that, then they are ghouls.

It is like watching a black comedy to see how people from both sides of the world kicking and scratching, fighting over the title ‘the civilised ones’. Civilised ones don’t oppress, simple as that. They should look in the mirror and ask themselves the question.

I am asking those who are sitting in a cosy room, with a packet of crisps in their hands, watching YouTube the virtual coliseum. Have you been in a situation where your only option is to defend yourself or die? What kicks do you get by watching blood flow out of another human being? Are your lives that empty you need something intense to shock you ?

I know there is nothing to stop people from abusing the internet especially videos at the moment. YouTube obviously is a heartless body that generates products of sick-minded people. The least we can do is by not watching evil videos some people keep churning out every five minutes on YouTube. Then you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that you are not a barbarian stuck in the modern time.
