I am a white mother of twin black tween boys from Africa. Their mother died shortly after they were born, we now live a highly privileged life in New England. I have another birth child who is younger and white. My approach is to talk about race and racism whenever necessary. I will confront prejudice whenever it raises its ugly head with whomever raises it. Prejudice of any kind is unacceptable. I take no pleasure in seeing the squirm of discomfort when I confront people I know, like and even love spew racist comments that they are totally oblivious to. My approach ranges from wise sage to hammer between the eyes, but I will not back down. My children deserve more than me turning a blind eye, as does anyone who has been on the receiving end of prejudice.
