Our Impossible Minds series profiles the individuals who are building new possibilities for the future across technology, design and culture. This time we talked with Andrew Beckley — Managing Director of Europe.

What’s fascinating about your role at Impossible?

My role is to lead our people and work in Europe. To find the next super stars, build the next relationships and to find the next impossible problems for all of us to help solve.

I love problems, the more impossible the better and, goodness, the world currently has lots of them. It’s great to be in a place where I can help do that, it’s a very privileged position.

I believe everything is linked — cultures, attitudes, behaviours, mindsets — one small thing can have a huge effect whether that is in life, in work, with the planet or across them all. Lots of people ask me where my skills lie — in HR, in sales, in operations — but I don’t see them as separate. I work across it all, what I find fascinating is trying to work out how the whole performs better for the good of all.

What problem are you now solving?

The future of working relationships, the future of the planet and the future of how we reward and share wealth are my top 3 at the moment. Most challenges come down to humans and their strange but amazing minds.

What are you currently obsessed with and why?

I’m obsessed with the creative industries. I think they, and the people in them, have huge potential to lead us in a new world. However, most of them seem obsessed with the old one or so inward looking that they haven’t realised the world and the real need have changed. It’s a really human trait to get stuck with the blinkers on. We have to get good at unlearning and listening.

What kind of future do you want?

I want one that corrects some of the wrongs we’re currently living through. One that is designed for my daughter and not for my grandad.

What would you say are the biggest challenges to achieve that future?

Our mindsets, mainly of old men. Or taught by them. We know so much more now, much more than even 20 years ago. There’s so much potential our there in the universe. Yet we’re stuck revolving around a relatively few ego’s.

Tell us a story

Storytelling is one of the best things to learn and set yourself apart form the rest. The people who tell the best stories get the biggest audience, that hasn’t changed for 1000s of years. And it’s one thing humans will probably beat algorithms at for a long time yet.
