Messenger Adds New Features 🔥 to End-to-End Encryption

Messenger recently began rolling out the ability to make end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls, as well as updated controls for disappearing messages. People expect their messaging apps to be secure and private, and these new features give them greater control over the level of privacy they want for their calls and chats.

What’s New in Messenger Latest Update
The very first thing is End-to-end encrypted voice and video calls. Since 2016, Messenger offered end-to-end encryption for one-on-one text chats. They’ve seen a surge in the use of audio and video calling over the last year, with over 150 million video calls per day on their Platform. Now, they’re adding calling to this chat mode, so you can use the same technology to secure your audio and video calls if you choose. 😍 Isn’t that awesome?

End-to-end encryption is already widely used by applications such as WhatsApp to safeguard personal conversations against hackers and criminals. It’s becoming the industry standard and works similarly to a lock and key, with access to the conversation restricted to you and the other participants in the chat or call. The content of your messages and calls is protected from the moment they leave your device until they reach the receiver’s device in an end-to-end encrypted conversation. This means that nobody, including Facebook, will be able to see or hear what is sent or said. Keep in mind that if something goes wrong, you can report it to them via an end-to-end encrypted message.

What else in the Update?
Controls over Disappearing Messages have been updated. Additionally, they’ve updated their end-to-end encrypted chats’ expiring message feature. Individuals do not always want or require their messages to remain visible, and the timer controls enable individuals to control when their messages expire in the chat. Above all, they have updated this setting to give users more control over the amount of time before all new messages are deleted, from as little as 5 seconds to as long as 24 hours.

✅ What’s in the Future?
“Within the next few weeks, some users may gain access to additional test features within these fully encrypted chats, which provide users with increased privacy and security in their communications” said Messenger in their blog.

— End-to-end encrypted group chats and calls in Messenger 🔥

They’ll start testing end-to-end encryption for group chats, including voice and video calls, between friends and family members who already have a chat thread or are connected. Additionally, they’ll begin testing your delivery controls’ compatibility with end-to-end encrypted chats. This way, you can avoid unwanted interactions by controlling who has access to your chats list, who goes to your requests folder, and who is unable to message you at all.

— Opt-in end-to-end encryption for Instagram DMs.

Additionally, they will begin a limited test with adults in selected countries in which they can opt-in to end-to-end encrypted messages and requests for one-on-one conversations on Instagram. Similarly to how Messenger currently works, you must already be in a chat or be following each other in order to initiate an end-to-end encrypted DM. As always, you can block someone you don’t want to communicate with or report an incident to us if something appears to be wrong.
