The concept of eBooks can be traced back to the 1930s, when American writer Bob Brown had an idea for “readies,” which were text-based publications in digital form.

However, it wasn’t until the late 1990s that eBooks began to gain popularity. In 1998, the first dedicated eBook readers were launched, including the Rocket Ebook and Softbook.

In the early 2000s, eBooks did not find wide acceptance by the publishing industry, and investment in e-reading devices and e-book technologies subsided.

However, the industry’s resurgence began when Sony Corporation released an e-reading device in 2006 and Amazon.com released the Kindle in 2007. Sales of eBooks in the United States grew rapidly after these devices were released.

eBook Formats

Electronic or digital books can come in printable PDFs, enhanced PDFs with hyperlinks and embedded files, or “true eBook” formats.
