Redesigning : A UI/UX Case Study on Enhancing DeFi Dashboard Usability
Introduction
In the dynamic world of decentralized finance (DeFi), having a platform that lets you effortlessly explore and evaluate new opportunities is essential. This was the challenge faced by , a DeFi dashboard that tracks various blockchain networks including Solana, SUI, and Aptos. Although was already a valuable tool, its Ecosystem/Platforms Page wasn’t living up to its potential. It was difficult to navigate and overwhelming for users, which sparked the need for a redesign. This case study details our journey to revamp this crucial page, aiming to make it more intuitive and accessible for all users, from blockchain experts to those new to DeFi.
Identifying the Problem
Right from the start, I saw a big challenge. Whether they were seasoned blockchain enthusiasts or newcomers curious about decentralised finance, users found the Ecosystem/Platforms Page on confusing and overwhelming. It lacked effective filtering tools, bombarded users with too much information at once, and had a disjointed user interface. These issues made it difficult for everyone to efficiently discover and engage with new platforms, which was a major hurdle in their DeFi exploration.
Approach and UX Process
The redesign process kicked off with a deep dive into understanding the needs of the users through brain storming and behavior analysis. This initial phase of gathering insights was crucial for accurately identifying the core issues. The findings made it clear: there was a strong need for a more intuitive user interface that could cater equally well to both tech-savvy users and novices. This became my guiding principle as I moved forward with the redesign.
Adopting a Web3 Design Philosophy
Embracing the core principles of Web3 decentralisation, transparency, user empowerment, and privacy-was pivotal in my redesign efforts. The design needed to embody these ideals, not just aesthetically but functionally. My focus was on giving users more control over their data and simplifying their experience with a cleaner, more navigable interface. This philosophy guided every decision I made, aiming to create a platform that truly felt like it belonged to the users and respected their interactions and privacy.
Crafting User Personas
To tailor the design effectively, I developed detailed personas:
Syed, a tech-savvy software developer, looks for depth and flexibility in his DeFi exploration tools. He represents users who are familiar with blockchain technology and seek advanced features that can enhance their investment strategies.
Emma, a marketing manager new to the DeFi space, seeks simplicity and educational resources to aid her understanding. She embodies newcomers who need an easy-to-navigate interface and clear, accessible information to feel comfortable and confident in their DeFi activities.
These personas allowed me to visualise the diverse needs of the user base, guiding my design process to ensure the platform was inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of their level of expertise.
The Solution
The redesign focused on several key enhancements to address the issues identified:
- Improved Asset Information: I ensured clear visibility of essential data, including asset names, logos, and succinct descriptions, along with crucial market data such as network information, category, and total value locked (TVL). This made it easier for users to quickly grasp the fundamentals of each platform at a glance.
- Enhanced Search and Filters: I introduced sophisticated yet user-friendly filtering options that allow users to effortlessly sift through a myriad of platforms. This feature was designed to help both experienced users like Syed and newcomers like Emma find exactly what they need without hassle.
- Dual Theme Support: Acknowledging the diverse preferences of the user base, I implemented functionality for both light and dark modes to improve accessibility and user comfort. This ensures that the platform can be used comfortably at any time of the day, in any lighting condition, catering to the personal preferences of each user.
User Journey Map and Interface Design
I meticulously crafted user journey maps for each persona, ensuring their path from discovery to engagement was seamless and intuitive. For Syed, this meant creating a journey that allowed him to dive deep into technical details and compare platform metrics easily. For Emma, it involved simplifying the navigation so she could learn and explore without feeling overwhelmed.
The interface design focused on being both aesthetically pleasing and functional, aligning with modern design trends while embracing the minimalistic ethos appreciated by the community. This balance helped in making the platform not just easy to use, but also a pleasure to navigate.
Competitive Analysis
In my analysis of competitors like DeFiLlama, CoinGecko, and De.Fi, I identified several gaps in the market and opportunities for innovation. I aimed to set the redesign apart by integrating the strengths of these platforms-robust data analytics and user-friendly design -while also emphasising community-focused features that were lacking elsewhere. This combination was carefully chosen to enhance the user experience and meet the specific needs of our diverse user base.
Results and Key Takeaways
The redesign has not yet been launched, but the feedback from initial testing has been very encouraging. I anticipate that the changes will lead to increased user engagement, higher satisfaction rates, and a noticeable uptick in daily active users once fully implemented. Some key takeaways from this project so far include the undeniable importance of user-centered design, the effectiveness of iterative development, and the critical role of aligning with Web3 philosophies to build trust and foster community engagement.
Conclusion
The redesign of the Ecosystem/Platforms Page was more than just a visual update; it represented a strategic shift towards enhancing usability and user satisfaction. This case study illustrates how thoughtful design can profoundly impact user experience and provides a framework for future projects that aim to simplify complex technologies for everyday users in the DeFi landscape.
