The greatest ad man you have never heard of
Steve Harrison on Howard Luck Gossage
He invented interactive advertising, social media, community building, buzz.
Howard Luck Gossage (1917–1969) is the greatest ad man you have never heard of.
He was almost completely forgotten.
Then last year, Steve Harrison—who has won more Cannes Direct Lions than anybody else—penned the first biography of the “Socrates of San Francisco”: “Changing the World Is the Only Fit Work for a Grown Man”—a fantastic read.
I had the chance to sit down with Steve a couple of weeks ago in London.
And I had my iPhone camera on.
By the way: Steve’s other book — the out-of-print guide “How to Do Better Creative Work” — sells at a reasonable $600 or so on Amazon (and at up to £3000 on Amazon UK).
Which means: You might want to get a copy of his book on Gossage as long as you can afford it.
But now, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy a master of advertising talk about another.
