Wells Fargo App Intro Redesign

I woke up on Saturday morning with a sore throat and an urge to do something creative. I peered out the window onto the ever-busy street of Powell as a cable car rolled by. It’d be a week before we get some sun back in San Francisco. I opted to stay indoors and spend the day redesigning the intro screen for Wells Fargo’s mobile app.

Existing Intro Screen

It’s trying to do too much in a single view

Utility

In a mobile banking app, utility is key. It should be incredibly easy for users to accomplish what they came for, and go on with their day. Tasks that are most common, like finding the nearest ATM, should be given a higher priority over actions that are not as common, like opening a checking account. If my goal was to find the nearest ATM, I’d need to scroll through over 2 screens worth of irrelevant content and links.

Constraints

Taking an MVP approach, the most common tasks to accomplish are:

  • signing on to my account
  • finding the nearest ATM / bank
  • managing appointments with a teller near me
  • contacting Wells Fargo for other general information

The Redesign

Palette

Starting with Wells Fargo’s brand colors, burgundy is the base color with gold for accents. White and light grays throughout gives the app a fresh and bright “morning” feeling when opening the app. Overall, a much cleaner UI.

Brand

Designing for a young tech startup is not the same as designing for a 160 year old financial institution. Referencing Wells Fargo’s rich history is very important for brand identity and instilling trust. The tagline “Together we’ll go far” is front and center in burgundy. And it’d almost be a crime to not include the iconic stagecoach, which is faded slightly in the background.

Feedback is welcome. I hope to do more of these soon. Thanks for reading!
