Gojek’s Self Managing Teams
Every organization has it’s own culture, some of them are good and some of them are bad, culture plays a vital role in company’s growth and it’s survival in the market. Gojek has one of the best culture when it comes to ownership. At gojek, we believe that a team should be self managing and should be able operate independently on their own. Let’s see how we are doing this.
Why teams should manage themselves?
A self-organized, semi autonomous small group of employees whose members determine, plan, and manage their day-to-day activities and duties under reduced or no supervision. Also called self directed team or self-managed natural work team.
If a team requires a manager to manage them then there is something seriously wrong with them. Because then you don’t know what exactly you are doing or you don’t know how to work with a team.
What is job of a Product Manager?
Most of the time people think that the job of the product manager is to manage people but believe me it’s not. They have much bigger purpose to serve for the organization. A product manager is there for gathering product requirement and communicating those requirement to the team. A product manager is not a People’s Manager who is going manager team members.
How gojek approaches self managing teams?
At gojek, we believe in self managing teams and we embrace that. We train people to learn through various ways like new grads learn this by going through boot camp and for other new hire we arrange internal agile session to make sure that they learn how to become self managed and self sufficient before they hit the floor.
Final Thought on Self Managing Teams:
Self managing teams makes sure the company is growing and the growth is super fast. It helps the teams explore and experiment with the things internally.
