What I Did To Get One Step Closer To My Dreams
The power of intention
As many of you know, I am a Muslim.
I was born into Islam and from a young age I have learned how to live a life according to Islamic teachings and principles.
The first thing you learn as a Muslim is about the five pillars of Islam;
- Fasting in the holy month of Ramadhan
- Pilgrimage to Mecca also known as Hajj
Hajj — Pilgrimage To Mecca — the fifth pillar of Islam is to make a pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, at least once in one’s lifetime. This pillar is obligatory for every Muslim, male or female, provided that he/she is physically and financially able to do so.
Every year approximately 2,000,000 Muslims travel to Mecca for Hajj. This year a few of my close friends and their families embarked on this sacred journey to Mecca. What amazed me the most about this whole process is that I witnessed my friends live out one of their dreams.
They made an intention for Hajj well in advance of them travelling to Mecca. You would need to because you have to prepare for the journey mentally, physically and financially.
It’s a process.
But it all starts with an intention.
I made sure to visit both friends before they left and wished them well on their journey. Before I saw them, I realised that their desire, their wish and their dream had turned into reality right in front of my eyes.
Here are 3 lessons I learned from making intentions.
Don’t take it from me though, word for word one friend stated —
“Everything just became easy after I made the intention. I didn’t have to worry about anything. It just came together”
I dedicate this article to all my brothers and sisters who intend to make their pilgrimage to Mecca this year.
Below, I elaborate on the power and importance of intentions.
Intention is the first step.
What do you desire? What do you really want to happen?
When you intend to do something, you build momentum. A little bit of momentum is all you need to dive deeper into achieving your goal, task or journey — it can be anything.
A race can only be won by taking One Step At A Time.
Once you’ve built momentum, you’re one step closer to the finish line.
I have a dream.
I know you do too.
I believe intention has the power of turning your dream into your reality.
When you intend to act upon your dream, it literally becomes a part of your reality. You give your dream substance and two legs for it to stand on.
Your intention will be the difference between what you wish for in life and the actions you take to get there.
Now you can stop dreaming.
Every weekend, I intend to complete 3 tasks unrelated to work. I write them down before I forget.
Here’s this weekend’s —
If I complete all the tasks I intend to, I feel a sense of fulfilment. I achieved what I set out to achieve. I did it! Ask me how my weekend was and I’ll reply — “good.. no, great actually!”.
If you were to ask me how my weekend was for a weekend where I didn’t complete the things I intended to, or a weekend where I didn’t make any intentions at all — “..could have been better”. All of Sunday night I think to myself — “I should have done this, I should have done that”.
The thing is, I want to feel fulfilled every weekend.
No, actually I want the feeling of fulfilment everyday.
That’s why I make intentions.
That’s how I will turn my dreams into reality.
That’s how I build momentum to get to where I want to be.
