How clueless I am about what women must endure socially.

I lived in NYC for a number of years after University, and I still go into the city from time to time. It never occurred to me to ignore what people said to me in public as I now understand you need to do.

Apart from some comment that someone might have said as an insult or in anger, and therefore best to avoid replying, I can never recall a time when I had to “block my ears” as I walked down the street.

As an Anglo-American man, and therefore a member of the class of people to whom North American society defers, I never have had the experiences you describe, and unless I am very observant or someone tells me as you have then I would remain ignorant.
