For most individuals, creating your avatar using Midjourney is impractical unless you are a celebrity, primarily due to the limited availability of easily accessible online photos.

With Midjourney’s exciting NEW “Character Reference” feature, you can now craft personalized artwork using your photos. This guide will walk you through the process of creating a unique avatar that represents you.

This feature empowers you to utilize your skills in Midjourney to create distinctive human portraits. This can be a fun side job with the potential to generate additional income. 😊💰

Let’s get started!

Today, I will show you how to use Midjourney NEW “Character Reference” feature to easily create custom avatar

  • Part One: What is “Character Reference”
  • Part Two: How to use “Character Reference”
  • Part Three: Create Your Avatar with “Character Reference”

Part One: What is Character Reference

“Character Reference” allows us to create a character based on the image(s) of an existing character provided via URLs.

It aims to make the character match a “Character Reference” image, allowing us to create a consistent character across images and in different styles.

⭐️ Highlight Features

  • ⚒️ Functionality: This feature is similar to regular image prompts except it ‘focuses’ on the character traits
  • 👉🏻 Use: Type -cref URL after your prompt with a URL to an image of a character
  • 📝 Format: /imagine text prompt --cref URL
  • 🖼️ Compatibility: Works for both Midjournvey V6 and Niji 6

⭐️ Modify with -cw

  • You can use -cw to modify reference 'strength' from 0–100
  • -cw 100 (default) uses the face, hair, and clothes
  • -cw 0 focus on face

Part Two: How to use “Character Reference”

Step 1: Choose Your Reference Image

Step 2: Upload an Image or Copy a URL

  • Click the [ + ] button in your chat bar and upload an image
  • Right-click the center of the image and select ‘Copy Link’ or ‘Copy Media Link’ .

Step 3: Type Your Prompt

Type/imagineas you usually do. Then, input your prompt to describe the image you want to generate and add --cref URL

💡 Formula: [ Style of the image ] of [ your character ] [ more description — option ] --cref URL

Prompt: A digitsl painting of the man standing in the woods --cref URL

⭐️ Something To NOTE:

✅ Character attributes that WILL work well with -cref:

Big Obvious Features: teal curly hair, pink sunglasses, floor-length trenchcoat, green backpack

❌ Character attributes that will NOT work well with -cref:

Tiny Details: A silver pendant necklace with eight small pyramid-shaped jewels, dimples, freckles or t-shirt logos.

Transform the Style with --cw (cref weight)

With --cw, you can transform fictional characters into multiple styles plus changing the outfit, hairstyle and settings to create the ideal portrait you are looking for.

You can use --cw to modify reference 'strength' from 100 to 0. First, let’s see how the weights affect the outcome.

👉🏻Transform Style with -cw:

  • -cw 100 is default and uses the face, hair, and clothes
  • -cw 99 to -cw 1 will begin to pick up less of the whole character
  • At Strength 0 -cw 0 will pick up ONLY the face

Part Three: Create Your Avatar with

To create an avatar, I suggest using -cw 0 as the system will focus on the face. This is good for changing outfits, hair and style.

The critical part is the Text Prompt.

You can use keywords like:

  • Anime
  • Avatar
  • Cartoon
  • Caricature style
  • Characters
  • Disney Pixar Style
  • Game Character

Here are a few examples:

Combine the Power of “Style Reference” & “Character Reference”

You can use more a reference image to influence the style of your character. This is great for generating a set of collections or graphic novels.

📌 What is Style Reference
Style Referencegives you the ability to reference the style of another image or to keep a consistent style across many images with --sref

Character Reference + Style Reference
