Endings and New Beginnings
A Reflection on Our Journey and What Lies Ahead
As the Executive Director of the Office of Inclusive Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Texas at Austin, I’ve been privileged to witness an extraordinary evolution. But as some of you might know, the recent closure of the Division of Campus and Community Engagement has necessitated the shutdown of our office. Yet, as we prepare to draw the curtains on this chapter, our spirits and resolve only grow stronger.
Last week marked our final showcase, an event that embodied the culmination of hard work and dreams. Watching our students step onto the stage for their demo day, delivering pitches that not only impressed but truly moved the audience, was nothing short of inspirational. The pride evident in the eyes of their parents spoke volumes about the transformative power of our programs.
In just a week, we embark on a 29-day Maymester trip to Spain with several of our students to explore the startup ecosystem across Valencia, Madrid, and Barcelona. This trip is more than just a learning experience; it’s a vital part of their growth, exposing them to global perspectives and cultural immersion that will shape their future endeavors in entrepreneurship.
This year, our all-women student staff has significantly expanded our capacity, growing to a vibrant team of 15. Their dedication enabled us to enrich our programs, from mentoring partnerships to securing internships and job placements for our students.
I must extend my deepest gratitude to Dr. Latoya Smith, who has been instrumental during this transition, and my colleagues in the Center for Leadership and Learning, especially Dr. Tiffany Lewis, whose support has been crucial in funding and advancing our impact.
Reflecting on our last demo day, which was a ‘butterflies’ theme, symbolizes the transformation we are undergoing. As a caterpillar transitions to a butterfly, we too are evolving. This is not the end but a new beginning. We may be transitioning out of the university, but our mission endures. The spirit and objectives with which we founded this office will continue to guide us.
As we prepare for this transition, know that the journey doesn’t end here. Our work, recognized by entities as esteemed as the United Nations and celebrated through national accolades, transcends the confines of any institution. It is a testament to our collective commitment to empowering individuals, especially those from underserved backgrounds.
While our office at the University of Texas at Austin closes, our work is far from over. If you wish to stay connected or support us, please reach out on LinkedIn. Let’s continue to champion economic empowerment and societal change together.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey. Our work did not start at the University of Texas, and it will certainly not end here. We stand ready to embrace the next phase of our mission, wherever that may lead.
