The Kaveri — River
The sacred river of southern India, the Kaveri originates on Brahmagiri hill in Talakaveri, Karnataka. It starts its journey from Kundike pond and descends the Eastern Ghats in a series of great falls. Before emptying into the Bay of Bengal south of Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, it forms a wide delta called the ‘garden of southern India’ and rightly so.
Known to devout Hindus as Dakshin Ganga, the Kaveri is mentioned in Tamil literature for its scenic beauty. Mill ions of people in south India, especially the tribal population, are heavily dependent on the river not just for their livelihoods, but also for their emotional reservoirs. The river offers some sublime sights, especially at the famous Shivanas amudra Falls and the Hogenakkal Falls near the town of Hogenakkal in Tamil Nadu. If you want to see how beautiful shallow waters can be, visit the town of Erode.
