The Sutlej
The Greeks call it Zaradros, and ancient settlers called it Shatadru in Sanskrit. If you’ve ever read a textbook of geography in India, you’ll remember that this is the longest tributary of the Indus. It originates in Tibet, and flows through Himalayan gorges into Himachal Pradesh. It is here that the river manifests its beauty and awesome power, especially around the Kinnaur Valley. The landscape is mostly rocky and barren, but strangely beautiful and appealing. It is a very masculine visual impact, unlike the soft, mellifluous, wooded expanses of some other rivers. As the Sutlej flows farther through Nangal in Punjab and meets the Beas, it retains its nature and stance, as well as its beauty. The landscape changes a little, becoming a bit more green, dotted with arid stretches. The river then makes its way into Pakistan.
