Red Fort of Delhi: Historical past that turned pride of Nation
Introduction
The Red Fort is the massive fort in Delhi, the national capital of India. This fort is located in the heart of the city, Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi. This architecture had been the former residence of the mughal dynasty, built by Shah Jahan when the capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi. Red Fort had been built by using the red sandstones in the Mughal style. It took 9 years in completing the construction of this majestic architecture. Several museums are housed within the fort complex that display the ancient artifacts depicting the history of India. On every 15th August, the Independence Day, the Prime Minister of India hosts the flag at the Red Fort. The former name of the fort is Quila-e-Mubarak or the Blessed Fort, which lies on the banks of river Yamuna. The Red Fort was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site in year 2007.
On every Sunday, the Red Fort is closed.
Architecture
The Red Fort is built with the blend of Indian, Persian and Timurid style of architecture under the guidance of the architect- Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, who is also the architect of the Taj Mahal in Agra. Several structures are housed within the complex like Diwan-i-Aam, Moti Masjid, Diwan-i-Khas, Nahr-i-Bashisht etc. The fort is composed by the following gates like Delhi gate, Lahori gate, Turkman gate, Kashmiri gate, Mori gate and Ajmeri gate.
Light and Sound Show
Every evening, the Light and Sound Show is conducted at the Red Fort where history is narrated in bi-language — Hindi and English. Please remember, on Monday, the show is not conducted.
Best Time to Visit the Red Fort
