Reader’s digest | OceanDAO Round11 | Part 1

--

Hello everyone and welcome to Part One of the November’s edition of Ocean DAO reader’s digest.

While there’s already an extensive view on Ocean Pearl to review the projects that have been submitted for the Round11 of Ocean DAO, We offer a short skinny on all projects with their Ocean DAO history.

Ocean DAO voting begins

Disclaimer: The reader’s digest is not to be misconstrued as a technical analysis for all projects. It’s a mere skinny on all projects designed to take minimum of your time before proceeding to read further on all projects. All Project details are mentioned on Ocean Pearl

DataUnion Foundation:

DataUnion Foundation

What they mean for the Ocean ecosystem:

The OceanDAO veteran group of DataUnion have their proposals in place for launching a collective of data-unions that act as service providers in terms of providing AI ready data with co-owned algorithms. The data-unions seem to be leveraging the AI ready data to trigger a mission for a sustainable data economy by connecting people to the Ocean protocol ecosystem.

Highlight from a recent AMA

Now that we have our data markets on numerous chains, is DU planning to migrate and if so what would be your first choice and why?
If you do choose to migrate what are the plans to protect your current shareholders and migrate them with little or no fuss?

DU is planning to migrate on the one side but on the other side to be also multi chain like Ocean Protocol. Our first choice was Polygon due to the very, very low transaction fees which are helpful if there are thousands of algorithm calls per day. Also rewards should be paid out without large transaction fees — at the moment we can’t pay them out as this makes no sense due to Ethereum Gas costs. Recently we got into the Celo camp (a mobile first blockchain) and now we are thinking of also bridging our data tokens over to that chain. This will be a challenge but we think that multi chain is the way to go for us in the future as well

Data Whale

Data-whale

What they mean for the Ocean ecosystem:

The veteran team of Data-whale have been one of the earliest startups in the Ocean Protocol ecosystem. Their mission of regarding Data and Data tokens as an asset class promise to bring in the network effect of pushing forward the most sought after datasets towards the data-brokers and consumers. This could provide the needed swivel for profit streams to data stakeholders.

A word from the Founder:

  1. In reference to the Reflections article on the Round10, what did it mean for the Data Whale team for re-evaluation? How do you plan on funneling the motivation going forward in terms of adding value to the Ocean ecosystem?

Data Whale’s core objective is to build software that encourages the adoption of Data Tokens and the Ocean Market. Whilst building ALGA, our mobile app, we have also simultaneously conducted various Outreach initiatives (YouTube, Blog, Twitter, PR etc.) that aimed to also build a customer base for our app in the future. In Round 10, we allocated a substantial amount of money towards scaling these initiatives, which resulted in negative sentiment towards our proposal. Therefore, we have re-aligned our strategy and will focus on Outreach once we have the product finished.

2. With the recent Ocean Stewards program that got inducted, what’s your fair opinion on them. Do you think they can be effective accelerator for future projects that are Tier 2+?

The stewardship call helped us to re-align our proposal, as well as grant amount. I do indeed believe that a constructive review pre-voting can help Proposals become more successful.

Ocean Missions:

Ocean Missions

What do they mean for the Ocean Ecosystem:

Ocean missions have a bridging functionality in terms of connecting data providers to data buyers, who are essentially companies that need access to on-chain data. They also have exciting use-cases for the Ocean Protocol ecosystem in terms of having a community driven platform for DeFi, NFTs & Crypto.

A word from the Founder:

  1. What prompted you to form Ocean missions? As a community it is fascinating to see what could be there to offer after the previous projects of Go-to-market analysis and Data Funnel.

Ocean Missions came about after doing a deep dive on Ocean Protocol from a commercial perspective. I love the mission of Ocean Protocol and when people ask me what it does today I say “they are trying to make it so that you own your data, you’re not just handing it over to Facebook, google etc” and that always seems to capture peoples attention. But after getting a better understanding of how people (especially businesses) buy and sell data today they have a number of different solutions already and none of them have the learning curve associated with the Web3 stack. So from a purely UX perspective it made sense to target both data buyers and data sellers who were already familiar with crypto. It also helps that blockchain data is super valuable and a new thing which people are excited about. There’s a lot of great potential use cases out there though. This one just seemed like a relatively well aligned one.

2) Along your journey, have you seen any change in consumer behavior from potential customers to potential buyers?

I’ve had a lot of really exciting initial conversations with people. I think people get that blockchain data is valuable and it’s a seemingly good use case for Ocean Protocol’s data assets. If you can create and own valuable data assets that extract insights/data from the blockchain and someone is willing to pay for it, then it’s a good use case in my books. In this way, Ocean Missions could become like a wholesaler of blockchain insights that customers come to Ocean Protocol to purchase. I think it has a lot of potential.

Datalatte.ai

What do they mean for the Ocean Ecosystem:

Empowering internet users to monetize their own data and provide data scientists with access to non-identifiable users’ data using AI Feature Store at an affordable price. Data latte have an interesting use-case in terms of on-boarding newer users who are not crypto-savvy in nature.

A word from the Founder:

  1. At DataLatte, You mentioned during the due diligence of earlier rounds that you would like to act like a layer of trust in terms of bringing in mass adoption for users that are not so crypto-savvy. Has the vision changed currently?

It still is our vision, however there are barriers across crypto industry. One of main barrier we see, is a DID, trusted by users to access an interoperable experience across crypto protocols. A lot of initiatives is going in this path and once an industry global standard merges, access to solutions like ours for mass non-crypto savvy users becomes possible. Moreover, the transaction fees for micro transactions for micro data volume as of today, makes a viable business model more challenging. Especially when a privacy-by-design architecture is thought for each individual user, rather than a data pool.

2. What would be the plans going forward in terms of newer data-sets that you wish to put forward in terms of ease-of-use?

We plan to bring Netflix data for our initial data set and right after expand it to other type of data sets. To bring users to our platform, we are working on our main launch which will motivate each Netflix user to put a minute of their time to download a .csv file and upload it to not only earn on our platform but also benefit other utilities we are introducing. We are working on our NFT light paper and roadmap after it which makes our plans much more clear in a near future.

Skinny on a few Earmarked projects:

nCight:

A sub-Data union initiative that is focused on gathering niche quality data in Healthcare in the domain of Arthroscopy Imaging.

Impact: The returning team have a focused goal of creating the MVP website and application that would be designed to make it user-friendly for other domain experts to able images and get incentivized for participation.

DataPogy:

DataPOGY have a quality proposal in terms of data-cleaning, which seems to be a very native problem in healthcare data. De-cluttering them will help in terms of better data-processing and analysis. The team has done their initial plans in terms of delivering a technical design with complete user flows and wireframes in their current ROI goals.
