Learn to install Your Piston Rings

Installing a machine or a part of it is always a difficult thing to do. It becomes easy if the installation process is carried out with some guidance, instructions or tricks.
There are many methods to install rings, but it is important to carefully bind the rings to the Piston. Piston rings should be installed rightly after the Piston pin rod package is installed.

Is there a tool to do this?

Before, rings were installed by way of a special set of pliers as rings were much thicker.

But in present times rings are with much thinner cross section and lighter tension so it can easily be installed on the Piston by our own.

It is easy to install an oil ring as you have to just wrap it on the Piston and insert in the groove of the oil ring. Direction doesn’t matter in it. Now you need to properly wind on the oil ring scraper rail. One will be on the top of the ring groove and one to the bottom. Each oil ring package gap should be 120 degrees from each other.

When the oil ring package is installed, it will move easily from side to side in the groove. Don’t forget to make sure that the expander before pushing the Piston into the bore.

Now the second ring is installed. While observing the ring package you will find a raha round indentations set known as pip marks on both the Piston rings. The pip marks will face on the top side. Use a small screwdriver to maintain the gap at the end of the ring away from the piston. It will prevent the gap of rings from scratching the Piston.

When these rings are installed rotate the gaps in order to prevent it from coinciding. Rings will actually spin within the groove of the piston while working. If gaps are at distance, it will minimize the oil amount that fouls during initial engine fire. You cannot control the location gaps when the engine starts operating.

Always be careful while installing piston rings. If you are installing on your own, read out the instructions properly in order to maintain proper gaps. You can also use tools to fix it.
