Summer Mornings

Can’t you almost taste summer right now? It’s just around the corner since we’ve hit November and you can sense the electricity humming softly through the air. Isn’t it funny how suddenly it happens? One day I’m shivering in the freezing ocean and dancing like a mad thing to stay warm — the next, buying a paddling pool to help relieve the throbbing heat that seems to sink deep into you bones. I’m still adjusting to the new temperatures, and I’m not sure if I appreciate all this hot weather! It’s funny, in winter I wished for summer and now I find myself wishing that winter would return, and hoping like anything the whole summer isn’t like this!

In my opinion, the best part of summer is the mornings. Light, bright, normally a little breezy, and, best of all, not too hot! Below I’ve written a little bit about the sort of gorgeous summer mornings I love the most. I’ve tried to use my WORDCAM ( A sort-of fictional camera that takes mental photos with words) — not yet trademarked, to take a picture and describe it as best I can. Have a read, and tell me if I should invest in that little ™ and start selling it on TradeMe!

The sun is rising. A glowing orb of molten yellow buttercups, still half melted into the horizon, like a gooey cheese fondue. The air is warm, but not too hot. Just chill enough that you wish the luxurious ice-frosted warmth would last for the rest of the day. If you open your ears and listen closely you can hear the birds, sweetly chirping and harmonising, singing their secrets to the sky. A patch of tall grass, on the edge of the hill is silhouetted against a pale golden glow — the perfect background for a fairy ballet. The tall narrow blades are each perfectly outlined by a careful artist in black charcoal pencil, starkly contrasting with the delicate shades of the rising sun. The intoxicating aroma of flowering honeysuckle drifts through the breeze, filling your nostrils with an overpowering smell that reminds you of glamour and catwalks, yet at the same moment seems perfectly suited to a small cottage, hidden in a secluded mountain valley. There are other smells too, fainter, but still detectable; rich earthy soil; and the scent of a new day, mingling together in the air, unseen but still sensed. The sky is fresh and blue, like a newly painted wall. It’s smooth perfection is not yet marred by even a wisp of stray cloud. The sun streaks the ground with patches of whimsical light, falling carelessly upon the ruffled buds of the apple blossoms, crowded together in gossippy groups, whispering together and exchanging unknown secrets. A lone foxglove stands tall and bold against the onslaught of golden light. It’s purple flowers are polished and gleaming, as though Mrs. Fox has just sent them off to a very exceptional dry cleaner. Even the imperfections are perfection. You wish that the moment could be freeze framed, and last forever. A perfect snapshot.

This is my ideal early summer morning. (The only exception being Christmas where all I want is to tear off that wrapping paper!) But, actually, I’m glad that all mornings are different and that it isn’t like that every day. Because you know how the old saying goes, ( I actually don’t really, but I think this is it) ‘’You can’t have rainbows without rain’’ and it’s true. To appreciate something it has to be rare, and special. (For the record, I have no personal grudges against rain. I love rain. Rain is awesome. I mean rainbows are cool, but rain…. It’s just so dramatic; so awe inspiring…. so captivating..) Anyway, moving on. Everyone has their own preferences about mornings too. Whether you sleep in, write, meditate, go for a run, or just relax and read, mornings are cool. It feels invigorating to kind of have the slate wiped clean and see a new day just stretching out before you. (This can also be stressful and depressing, but you know — think positive!)

Enjoy the summer mornings! (Or keep your face firmly buried under the duvet till half past eight — whichever you prefer!)
