My Mattress Kicked Me Out of the House!

No, seriously.
A family had to leave their home, and throw out their belongings. Why? Because of mattress. A mattress.
The story begins when Nikki McKee bought a new mattress for her kids. She removed the outer cover to clean it. Her children slept on the bed for a week, without the cover.
No big deal, right?
Kids will be kids, and the mattress got wet. A small hole appeared as well.
Again, no big deal. Right?
Think again.
After replacing the cover, her children began coughing and itching. This continued for months. She used a blue light to investigate, and discovered their room had been “transformed”. “These little slivers of glass everywhere, and by everywhere, I mean on the sheets, on the mattress, on the bedding, in their stuffed animals in the netting on the wall,” McKee said.
McKee checked the inner cover again, she says the puncture had gotten bigger. She started finding flakes of fiberglass all over the house. She has had to throw away almost everything. The family has moved out and is buying another house. She’s got a message for anyone with a fiberglass inner cover on their mattress.
“Obviously, don’t get it wet, don’t get any holes in it, if you have to wash the cover, put it back on immediately,” McKee said.
Why is there fiberglass in her mattress in the first place?
Why should parents be aware of this?
It wouldn’t even occur to most families that their kids can’t sleep on a mattress without the mattress cover for a few days.
Fiberglass is a big issue-most people have no idea they are sleeping on it. It is used to meet fire retardant standards. Indigo found fiberglass in 12 of 13 mattresses we tested.
At Indigo, we use a rayon-based fabric that is the same material used in firefighters’ suits. That’s right, no fiberglass.
