With a wireless network, you may avoid running wires between equipment locations in your house or office. However, there are so many different types of wireless networks and standards that it can be difficult to determine which will best suit your needs.

You can skip the costly, time-consuming, and often tiresome process of running wires between various equipment locations in your house or office.

However, there are so many distinct types of wireless networks — LAN, WAN, PAN, MAN — and so many different standards — B, G, N, AC — that determining which will work best for your purposes is difficult.

Wireless networks are classified into four kinds.

Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN)

These are short-range networks that connect devices in a small area. A WPAN typically links devices within a person’s reach, though the range can extend up to 30 feet. A WPAN can unite compatible devices near a central location using Bluetooth technology, such as connecting a headphone to a laptop on your desk.

Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN)

WPANs are wireless networks that use radio waves rather than Bluetooth technologies. The access point for internet access is normally at least one cable, such as a wired internet connection entering into a router, which then transmits the wireless signal to additional devices. WLANs are used to connect to both local and internet resources. With the use of spread-spectrum or OFDM technologies, the range can be kept to a single room or home or expanded throughout an entire building or campus.

Wireless Wide Area Networks (WWAN)

Multiple satellite systems, antenna sites, or mobile phone signals can be used to maintain coverage across broad areas, such as cities or countries. WWANs gives a way to stay connected when other forms of network connection are unavailable due to their large coverage area.

Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMAN)

Connect many WLANs in a metropolitan area, such as separate city buildings.
