Do you Love your Job ?
Truth be told, there are times when we must have thought we were in the wrong ships, making the wrong moves, being in the wrong relationships, wrong friendships and engagements. These would resonate more with the youthful populace, we who are driven by the need to get things done fast — as fast as it is to get a date with your mobile phone, Just SWIPE Right, Date Found! Lol.
We can say that the concept of trusting the process and doing the long hard work might have been misplaced and forgotten these days. We find more people looking for the fastest route to attaining success (in their definition, this means amassing so much wealth- we will not dwell much on this today).
Finding fulfilment in a thing is a long hard journey, especially if the venture is one, we do not have direct control over (we actually don’t have direct control over most things). Fulfilment in the workplace is relatable with the big question often asked by millennials after 5,6,7 months of being in a job or of being in a relationship — Do I Love my Job? The reality however, is that it does not take 5–7 months to attain lasting fulfilment in anything.
Let’s take it to a more practical illustration: Being in Love.
We actually don’t wake up one day and find ourselves in Love with someone for the first time, we grow in love with that person over a sequence of habits, patterns and behaviors. Before going to bed at night, you check up on a person, before getting yourself a drink, you get the other person an ice cream, the little things accumulated over time are what makes us come to the conclusion ‘I Love You’. These words are not formed in a day or two. They are formed over time. And it takes a conscious effort to do all of these things before Love happens.
Now, Bringing it back to work.
You’d find some people say after 4 months; “I think I’m going to quit”. You ask them why and then they tell you “I don’t think I’m adding enough value”. Value is not a thing that makes meaning in 4 months! No two persons can have the same level of value in an organization. The impact of the value your colleagues bring might have more influence in the daily operations of the organization than yours — doesn’t make you a failure at your Job.
The moment, you got hired, you became an integral member of the value chain in the organization, and No, you are not in the wrong job if it’s taking you months to find the direct returns of your value in the organization. For some it is quicker, for some it is slower, there is no right amount of time is should take.
