That’s an incredibly fair point, so I’ll clarify.
If the director/team behind the product has their head up their ass but consistently turn out world class work, I can grit my teeth because they can actually back their egos up. Also, as long as they don’t sink to the level of shitting on all potential critics long before their work is even out, it’s even more tolerable because at least they waited until their work was completely before the public eye to cast any aspersions.
In this case, we had neither. The team behind this work was of questionable talent and all signs were good they were writing promise checks their egos couldn’t cash, and the finished product was so below expectation even Roeper was facepalming in hindsight. Also, long before their work was completely in the eyes of the public, they worked overtime astroturfing how only assholes sexist dudebros could hate it, suggesting (correctly, as it turned out) they had so little confidence it’s own merits would be enough to make the public like it they felt the need to browbeat the public into caring and silencing all critics before we had enough to decisively criticize.
