Former boxer Kostya and son Tim, a rising star in the sport, are famous for their incredible discipline.

But the seemingly invincible champions have shed light into one of the family’s darkest times, that had Kostya on his knees, literally as well as metaphorically, plus his mum pleading for big promises.

Tim and Kostya Tszyu joined presenter Ben Damon for a remarkably candid chat on the Main Event Boxing Podcast.

British ‘Hitman’ Ricky Hatton, who boasts an incredible career himself, shocked the boxing world in June 2005, stopping the heavily-favoured Tszyu at the end of the 11th round.

In Hatton’s home city of Manchester, Tszyu surrendered his light-welterweight crown.

But that was just the beginning.

It was Tszyu’s second loss in 34 fights.

And the last time the Russian-Australian went in the ring.

“I remember. It was just a horrible time,” son Tim even said on the podcast.

His dad really struggled to pick himself back up.

“For three or four months, I was completely gone from my head,” Kostya said.

“I was alone.”

And the hurt was felt across no less than three generations.

“I promised my mum I would never fight again,” Kostya continued.

“She asked me, ‘please, don’t do this.’”

And as can be heard on the podcast, the silence is just as telling as the words are, as they recall the challenging period in the Tszyu family’s lives.
