Our city is incredibly fortunate to have the gorgeous North Saskatchewan River running through it, and it’s no secret that (in our opinion) it is one of Edmonton’s most scenic features. While many Edmontonians enjoy the picturesque view of the river valley, some may be wondering how they can get the most out of this special city feature. Wonder no more, fellow adventure seeker. Check out this list of fun and unique ways you can take advantage of the river this summer.

Before beginning any river adventure, please ensure the weather is permitting and you have read the City of Edmonton’s list of rules and safety guidelines. When travelling on a non-motorized craft, ensure you have reviewed the river travel times before heading out.

1. Boating: Love the free feeling of cruising around in your powered boat but can’t seem to escape the city? Save yourself a trip to the lake and experience the thrill of power boating right on the river. Remember, it is our responsibility to maintain the conservation of our river and to ensure fellow users are having a safe and enjoyable experience. 2. Rafting: For anyone who has ever dreamed about moving a corporate event outside of the office walls and onto the glistening waters, river rafting is the perfect adventure for you. The River Valley Adventure Co. offers a safe, fun and memorable experience down the city’s waters, all while providing insight into the rich and vibrant history of the city. Experience team building like never before, all while enjoying the scenic view of the river valley. Available for groups of 20 people or more.

3. Canoeing: Cut through the glass-like waters with your paddle as you glide down the river in a canoe. Experience the river valley like the true adventurer you are, as you explore and navigate your way through each curve and turn of the river. Whether you’re looking to spend time with the family, try something new with your friends or looking to impress your crush with the perfect date, canoeing is sure to be a crowd favourite. 5. Stand Up Paddle Boarding: Calling all sports enthusiasts! Ready to try out a new and exhilarating water sport? Look no further. Stand up paddle boarding is a unique and thrilling way to bring your A-game to the river. This growing sport combines a surfboard with a paddle, and is sure to be your new favourite way to pump out adrenaline. Not familiar with this sport? 6. Dragon Boat Racing: Are you a social weekend warrior ready to take on any new adventure? If so, get ready to team up with the Edmonton Dragon Boat Racing Club for a fun and competitive day of dragon boat racing. Originated from China, this exciting race includes 22 people per boat working in unison to speed past their competitors. Whether you’re looking to meet other sports enthusiasts or bond with your work family, the EDBRC will provide an experience to remember. All you have to do is pack your game face.
