Tinted Glasses for your Car — What You Need to Know.

How cool is it when you drive around in your car with tinted glasses? Yes, you’re right… So cool!

I can tell you how a friend of mine do feel whenever I asked how he felt after such rides, he’d say “I feel like a king”.

You could feel like a president, or some rare diamond kept away from harsh handlings.

It’s a cool experience no doubt but underneath that cool lie some informations you might not know about.

First thing to know is that tinted glasses are not allowed for everyone, you’ll need a permit to get to use them though. Permits as you know need eligibility to be granted.

This article talks about how tinting of glass is handled in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria and the United States.

Generally you can get your tinted glass permit on two grounds:

  • For security reason; Government officials might need tinted glass permit for privacy and security, it can be granted to them.
  • Medical reason; Health issues like skin allergies, eye complications, etc. can give you a pass for obtaining a permit, but you must submit a report from a federal medical institution.

All over the world 100% black tinting is prohibited. Obtaining your permit in Nigeria can be as easy as visiting the NPF website or walking into any Police Station.

Note, the use of tinted glass without a permit is a punishable offence under law, avoid it.

Anyone caught driving around in a tinted glass vehicle without a permit will pay a fine of about 2,000 Naira. But there have been reported cases of 50,000 Naira fines (according to http://www.nairaland.com) or a maximum of six-month imprisonment or both.

In the US, the tinting game is slightly different especially because there are standard light transmittance that your tinted glass should have and it varies across states.

In Alaska for example, according to http://www.drivinglaws.aaa.com the front windshield can have tinting applied, but only on the top 5 inches of the window. Side windows must have 70% light transmittance. Rear windows must have 40% light transmittance and mirrored tints are not allowed.

Fines for illegal tinting in the US are typically as low as $100 and as high as $5,000 depending on the state and degree of tint.

Benefits of Tinted Glass on Vehicles:

Apart from being cool, here are some benefits that come with tinting your car.

  • Blocks UV Rays; Tinting your car can protect you from the sun’s harmful UV (Ultraviolet) rays, especially if you drive for a long period of time. The sun’s harmful UV Rays can cause skin cancer and accelerate skin aging.
  • Absorption of Solar Heat; You can improvise for car AC by tinting your car, the films are in grades and can block solar heat that would otherwise build up in the car. Fuel consumption from AC usage will reduce too.
  • Privacy and Security; You and your valuables are safer to some degree since nobody gets to see what’s contained in it. Even when parked.

The benefits are enough to make you want to go for it, but before you make the move make sure you are on the right side of the law.
