The vision of a mustard seed
A mustard seed is used as an analogy in a parable that Jesus shares in a teaching. In this snippet, without taking from the Saviour’s teaching, I use the analogy of a mustard seed to describe human limitation in vision and why we need a Higher Being to orchestrate our lives. It is completely light-hearted and I hope you enjoy reading this perspective.
Often times, an acknowledgement of limitation carries negative connotation. If we consider the workplace for instance, competition is what drives success. The employee that works a 25 hour workday is praised for dedication, even if his personal life suffers as a result. This is the very point of human limitation, we only really see what is in front of us at a given point. The problem is, we assume our perspective to be much broader than what it actually is. So when we make a decision we base our resolution on factors that are available to us.
If you wish to see this theory in action, consider this scenario:
You have two suitable suitors, who until this point, have only been engaging you from a point of friendship. You now wish to commit yourself and are considering formal courtship. You now need to make a decision and here’s the setting you are considering;
- Your first suitor lives within close proximity, your upbringing is similar, your interests are also aligned and you are both in the same field of study.
- Your second suitor lives at a further distance, they are inclined towards different interests and their exploration lies within a different field.
Taking the above into account, the general sense, from human perspective would be to gravitate towards the first suitor based on what is provided at hand. If this were a task requiring that kind of perception, a step towards that direction would be ideal. In this case, however, there is a large component missing that can only be included with broader perspective, brought by God. The first suitor appears ideal but looking at the situation through limited vision, we can only see three critical points. God can see the whole picture, He can see everyone’s hearts, their deepest intentions, their fit in His plan and their projected future. Only He can confirm each person’s ideal suit because He created each person and He knows compatibility range of His children.
So ideally, if a person where in a situation similar to the above. Their first point of call would be to present the situation to God and request His intervention and Divine discernment to make a meaningful decision. With broader view (at universal point), God is seated in a better position to bring universal solutions to our limited problems. To understand that we are limited is the first point of opening ourselves up to building a relationship with the Lord. With power in the right Hands, human existence becomes blissful.
I hope I have given you some alternative perspective to our relationship with God. He loves us and His intention is to bless every single child that He breathed life into.
