What You Need to Know If You’re Starting Something New

Take a moment and think about the last time that you gave up on something you were trying to achieve. It may be difficult to do, but really take a few moments to think of exactly what it was that you gave up on. What were you trying to accomplish and why? Once you have a clear picture of that in your head, I want you to think of exactly what it was about the situation that made you give up. What was happening at that moment in time that caused you to drop your goal or ambition? Maybe you thought that your goal was too hard to complete. Maybe it didn’t seem achievable at all. Or maybe you made a mistake and got discouraged. Take a few moments to think about the exact reasons why you ended up giving up. If I had to guess, I would say that no matter the reason, why you gave up had to do with your overall understanding of the process. Either things got too hard, things seemed completely impossible for you to complete, or roadblocks appeared that intimidated you enough to stop yourself from continuing forward.
Here’s the thing: this is a completely normal thing to do. When we start a journey and try to achieve something new, sometimes there are things about the process that we don’t fully understand. Things come up, we get intimidated, and many things happen that will discourage us from moving forward. But if we really want to achieve the goals that we set, it is crucial that we understand everything about the process that we are about to embark on. Now, when first reading that sentence you may think to yourself that that’s unreasonable. Allow me to clarify. When you start a new goal, I’m not saying that you need to know every physical aspect of every part of the process. If you’re trying to start a business, I’m not saying you have to understand each and every step along the way from start to finish, from the connections you are going to make, the branding strategies that you’ll use, your business model, and so on. In fact, knowing everything about what you are about to embark on may actually intimidate you and cause you to not even start. But it’s not about knowing the process itself, instead it’s understanding the process and building a mindset to work with that process.

The bottom line is that the key to your success is going to be your mindset throughout the entire process of whatever it is that you’re trying to achieve. This means that you need to understand what will happen from start to finish on a broader level. Take two men who enter the Navy Seal academy. The first man knows that training is going to be extremely difficult, that he is going to withstand physical and mental torture, and that the process only lasts 6 months. He doesn’t necessarily know every part of training, but his mindset is ready for what he is about to endure. The second man doesn’t know anything about what he’s about to walk into. He doesn’t know the difficulty level, he doesn’t know the length, and he doesn’t truly grasp the reward of making it all the way through.
When these two people enter Seal training, at the first moment that things get tough, the man who doesn’t understand the process is going to quit. There doesn’t seem to be an ending point, he isn’t quite sure what else is going to come, and at that one moment in time where things get hard it is going to seem like an impossible feat to continue. On the other hand, the man who understands the process knows that this difficulty is normal. He knows and expects thoughts in his head telling him to quit, and when he meets those thoughts, he is well prepared to endure them.

If you truly want to be successful at whatever it is that you are trying to accomplish, it’s time to start understanding the process. It’s time to realize that when things get hard or when things don’t go the way that you want them to, there will be thoughts in your head telling you to quit. But if you can fully understand the process, you can expect roadblocks, and you are waiting for the thoughts that pop up, you will be much more well equipped to push through those struggles and be successful.
