Yes, there is a great opportunity in creating highly targeted news for both publishers their technology partners. There is also great risk. At a time when people are becoming increasingly polarized, delivering only information they like, which is also information from the same point of view and the same opinions, only further divides us. It only informs us about what we already know without adding anything which might be critical or contrary unless it is actively ridiculed. To address the opportunity without acknowledging the implicit risks is a disservice to those in the EU, Latin America and Silicon Valley who are struggling to create a balance between what individuals want to hear and what they need to know. In the rush to the finish line, let’s not lose sight of the goal of news which is to inform, educate, and only then entertain. Personalized news is great but only if it offers a complete picture of the larger world we all share.
