12/6: Compassion vs. Empathy
Reading an essay from the Wall Street Journal threw my world upside down. My good friend Atikh Bana and I have talked deeply about empathy. We believed it’s the key to understanding people as well as success socially and in business. But, a case has been made that empathy isn’t all its made up to be. The case is made for compassion, as in caring about others and valuing their fates. We become biased towards a side if just merely “empathize”. My take is that compassion is the willingness to spring to action when someone is down or doesn’t understand. Empathy doesn’t necessarily lead to action, only a “sense” of understanding. Your take is?
