A Morning Walk

My mother, my friend and I build a habit of walking for 30 minutes every morning. We have been doing it for the last five months and I can see and feel the result of this morning walk.

My 72 year old mother had a knee surgery in March 2018. After the surgery, despite doctor’s recommendation to exercise, she has been afraid to exercise or go for a long walk. After more than a year, finally I persuaded her to go for a morning walk.

She started at a very low pace, around 16–17 minutes to walk one kilometer. My friend and I accompanied her, walking slowly at her pace to support her. After a few weeks, the pace started to improve, we walked faster and longer distance. Now, her pace is around 13–14 minutes for one kilometer and we walk about 2 kilometer every morning.

I can see the changes in her after building this simple habit. She is more energetic, more active, unlike before, staying in bed playing on her iPad most of the time. She has a lot of interactions with the neighbors and getting famous in our neighborhood. She shed some weights and has become healthier. She is happier too.

One simple keystone habit, a morning walk, can change lives.

What one simple thing are you going to do today that can change your life for the better?
