Manchester United forward, Mason Greenwood was arrested on January 31, 2022, on charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior occasioning bodily harm.

In February 2023, all charges against Mason Greenwood were dropped as the Crown Prosecution Service in Manchester in the UK, cited “withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light” as the reason for dropping the charges.

Manchester United had subsequently suspended Greenwood on his arrest and after his charges were dropped, issued an update saying they were conducting an internal investigation into the situation.

It’s been months now after Mason Greenwood’s charges were dropped and reports circulating today (August 16, 2023) indicate that Manchester United were planning to reintegrate Mason Greenwood into the United squad with an official statement scheduled to be released initially on Friday, August 4.

Greenwood’s case of attempted rape, threats, coercive behavior, and assault leading to bodily harm was dropped by the prosecution because the key witness, his girlfriend, who’s now had a child with him pulled out.

United have presumably made the decision to reintegrate Greenwood into the squad but have delayed the announcement due to likely causes of senior female players at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and as such, they haven’t been officially given a heads-up before an official announcement.

Female supporters of the club have protested against the decision as it feels increasingly likely Greenwood will be back.

The club has in turn let the protesters know they’re only consulted as part of a formality and not necessarily because they will consider their views as the decision can only be made based on the club’s findings and thorough investigations.

Greenwood was duly interviewed by the club, as well as his girlfriend and should he be reintegrated into the squad, he will have an interview to relay the full details of the alleged assault and the processes of investigations to the general public.

The club’s online fans want Greenwood back and have petitioned senior female players to greenlight his return to the club. The opinions of matchgoing fans are split.

United’s footballing department consisting of manager Erik ten Hag, the director of football John Murtough, and others support his reintegration into the squad, citing his loyalty to the club since signing at age seven. They’ve also considered rehabilitation and counseling, especially as he’s a young father, earns only £75,000 weekly, and has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for the club.

Greenwood has two years left on his contract and might see out these two years; however, a new contract or an extension isn’t being considered at the moment.

United have released an official statement saying that their internal investigation is now complete and that contrary to media reports, an official decision has not been taken yet. Regardless, they’ve asked for patience and the public not to judge the case from partial evidence available on the public domain.

More details of this investigation will be released soon.
