From ancient times to the contemporary era, carrier pigeons have been both traditional and enigmatic messengers in the history of communication. While technology dominates today, these intelligent sky butterflies have a long history that surpasses simple information-bearing duties.

Origins: Pigeons in Antiquity

The use of pigeons for message delivery dates back to antiquity. Ancient Egyptians employed pigeons to inform their cities of sports event outcomes, while in Greece, pigeons symbolized peace and were used to announce the impending arrival of ships.

Medieval Times: Air Mail Messengers

During the Middle Ages, pigeon messengers evolved into official services. In Iberia, the renowned Rothschild family had an extensive pigeon postal service. Medieval castles and military towers served as “service stations” for these postal pigeons.

Heightened Utility: Pigeons in Wars

In the 19th and 20th centuries, pigeons played a significant role in wars. During World War I, they were used as messengers in the battlefield to transmit military commands. Similarly, during World War II, they were utilized to distinguish military vessels.
