A Innovation Manifesto For Prince Georges County Maryland

A uniting vision for building an innovation economy

Before launching into the manifesto it is useful to set its context. This manifesto is not to imply that innovative activities or innovative people are not doing great things in Prince Georges County but there needs to be a systematic view driven by a uniting vision that shifts the culture towards one that inspires vibrancy, trust, collaboration across those activities and people. This will ultimately transform the economy, the community and accelerate the ability to meet the plans set forth in previous studies such as the Plan 2035 and the Prince Georges County Economic Development Strategic Plan. What has to happen to create a vibrant sustainable economy and community in the County is well documented. What is needed is the the community’s collective energy connected and focused on these objectives. What is also needed is a platform to connect and share these stories of innovation so that others can see where they fit in and join.

This manifesto starts with eleven belief statements as a summary. Each of these statements will be further discussed in subsequent posts. This is a collaborative effort and all are welcome to comment and contribute constructively. The secondary aim of this manifesto is to shed light on all the existing activities occurring that are in line with these beliefs. Please feel free to share your stories, thoughts, and insights in the comments section. This is the start of a larger effort. All who are interested are welcomed to join this journey.

The Prince Georges County Innovation Manifesto

If Prince Georges County Maryland intends to have a thriving innovation economy that serves as an engine for local wealth creation as well as a means of creating a high quality of life for all residents, we must make sure there are connected systems and infrastructure in place.

We believe in, accept and embrace change. Innovation starts with the understanding that current models for economic and community development in the County need transformation. We unite resources to act as local enablers of innovation.

We believe in creating cross-sector (i.e. business, education, health, arts and public service) connections that bring together northern, central and southern county stakeholders to implement the changes needed to create an inclusive economy and connected community.

We believe we need to better leverage the County’s assets towards innovation. It is well known that the County has all the ingredients to create a vibrant economy and thriving community.

We believe in opportunities and pathways for low income, low skilled and returning residents as all residents need to participate in the County’s innovation economy.

We believe in building coalitions of people who have national experience transforming economies and communities. We look at how similar economic and community development challenges are addressed and bring applicable solutions to the County.

We believe in leveraging existing broadband information and communications infrastructure and ensuring widespread adoption to increase access to information technology for all County households and businesses. We know that broadband information and communications infrastructure fosters innovation and stimulates job creation, income growth, and an improved standard of living.

We believe in local entrepreneurs and small businesses. We need to support local entrepreneurs, exponential entrepreneurs and small businesses for they will build anchor enterprises that will invest in and transform the local community.

We believe we should look at large County development projects with a bigger lens; not only do they create jobs and subcontracting opportunities, they also create new opportunities for innovation by creating new industries and adjacent markets.

We believe we need to create a Countywide innovation culture. We need events, publications, venues, dedicated convening spaces and a network of resources that attracts local entrepreneurs, existing businesses of various sizes and community stakeholders.

We believe in the importance of addressing barriers to capital much of the local community faces. We will create local access to capital by educating County based high net-worth individuals on impact investing and for-profit philanthropy.

We ultimately believe in creating a true innovation ecosystem that connects the entire County, excites and ignites all our local talent, creates an environment for that talent to thrive and links the County to all the innovation activities in the region.
