Wow. I got close to 70 reads on my previous newspaper design stories.
Thank you. I apologize for not posting more, but I am back.
For those not familiar, I decided to run posts on Medium explaining how I design the front pages of the current newspaper I work for: The Daily Union.
One of my posts got 59 reads. One of those reads, was a potential employer.
So … I decided to continue this series of posts.
Here is the front page I designed for Saturday, Feb. 8.

Everything a front page should have.
The main package, the teacher of the year, took a good amount of planning.
At first, I had the package on the right, and the court story on the left. The issue was that it would not be balanced. Too much photo, too little story.
So, I moved the package to the left in order to get two columns of text.
Anytime a photos has kids, it’s good. I really like these two photos. Kudos to the photographer.
I made “love,” “teaching,” and the lead all the same color of the teachers shirt. The coloring makes it more inviting.
Since the main package is the feature, I needed to balance things out. This is why the court story went in the right column. It’s more serious, and just as important. Below the fold are two stacked stories. Not ideal, but it was the logical choice.
Every story has an element, which is good. The anchor(the bottom story) has a good enough photo to place it there.
All in all, it’s a strong front. Good balance at the top and bottom, nice hierarchy with the photos and headlines.
