#911Day is less than a week away. How will you step forward on this day of #service?

--

The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance (9/11 Day), is a chance to help others in tribute to the victims of terrorism on September 11, 2001 and worldwide, first responders, and the countless others who serve to defend the nation’s freedom and around the world.

9/11 Day’s goal is to transform what is considered a day of tragedy into a day of service, unity, and peace. Beginning in 2002, family members who lost loved ones in the September 11th attacks led the effort for an appropriate and fitting tribute to honor their loved ones and those who volunteered to serve our country in response to the tragedy.

In addition to tributes and memorials, they sought to establish a national tradition that engaged our country in volunteer service that was forward looking and helped those in need, creating a lasting legacy for their loved ones. The leadership and efforts of these family members resulted in the legislative establishment of the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance in April of 2009.

Each year, 9/11 Day is one of America’s biggest days of service. From coast to coast, Americans from all walks of will step forward to participate in volunteer service activities, and, more simply, perform good deeds in memory of the victims of terrorism.

Here are some popular #GoodDeeds for 9/11 Day to get you started on your service journey:

  • Visit someone who will benefit from your company, like an aging friend or relative;
  • Deliver food or baked goods to your local fire or police station;
  • Donate something that’s in good shape away to charity; or
  • Volunteer at your local soup kitchens, food pantries, or food banks.

This year, our Commissioners, from different regions of the country, will participate in service activities. Want to keep in touch with the Commission on 9/11 Day and every day? Follow the hashtag #Inspire2Serve to see our Commissioners in action.
