I’ve been toying with the idea of doing some 30-day challenges this year. It started out as doing one every 2 months, with the month in between spent analyzing the results and then posting about it.

But then I got an email from Sarah Ruszkowski, who runs a site called Freedom is Hers.

She’s doing a full year of 30-day challenges, and my plan for 6 suddenly doubled.

While I’m very excited to follow her journey with this, it also got me really excited about the kinds of things I can challenge myself to do in the span of 30 days.

August’s Theme: Write 1000 Words a Day

Given that my average morning output of words hovers around 350–400 words, I know that this will really challenge me.

Let me explain why.

I started writing Fanfiction in 2008.

And I just realized as I wrote that sentence that I’ve officially been on FFN.NET for a full decade!

To me, 1000 words is about the length of a chapter on

In that context, I want to what? Write 1 chapter a day?? I haven’t had that kind of output (at least in Fanfiction) since about 2012.

That’s why it’s a nice challenge.

It’s not one of those frilly squat challenges that’s plastered on Pinterest.

It’s not something that’ll take me two minutes of barely any effort to complete.

When 350–400 words takes me 20 minutes, I fully expect 1000 words to take me about an hour.

An hour that, right now, isn’t part of my daily routine.

Join Me!

I invite you to consider your own set of 30-day challenges! It doesn’t have to be for a year, or even every 2 months. Just try one.

This’ll be my first, so I’m excited to get started and see what happens!
