Motivation is mother of creativity, productivity, and happiness. Motivation is what makes us to act, which creates movement, growth, and change; we feel involved, contended, and important. This new excitement and feeling makes us feel powerful through experiencing how we can change the world; and we completely get involved in the acts which brings us more creativity and we start creating more of what we love in our lives. And all of this gives our lives a meaning and happiness.

Here we will discuss about which factors causes demotivation and how to turn them in a motivation for you.

  1. Fear: Fear is not good for progress, and we all agree to it. It slows us down and makes us hesitant and careful, which can be beneficial, but sometimes our fears are based on our imagination rather than on an accurate assessment of the risks in reality. No matter how excited we are to go forward, but if our fear is big enough and one part of us wants us to keep safe then it will surely stop you from going forward into that territory which is both desirable and safer. Now how would you get over your fear, so simply start by naming your fears so that they’re out in the open. Now think through what if you just leave your this fear behind and move forward, what you could become or what you could achieve. Think why I am afraid of this fear. And when you do so, you will get your answers, and you will find that some of these fears are actually not worth fearing. And by doing this some of your fears will slip away immediately. Now see what all you need to do as steps to do what you intend to do. And then start working towards those small steps and it will take you to your desired result.
  2. Setting the Wrong Goals: Setting wrong goals for your life can possibly demotivate you. By wrong goals we mean the goals which are not right for you. Reasons could be anything from the impulsive decision, wrong timing, wrong expectations, wrong set of people, wrong place etc. Take some time to review your goals. Try to figure out what went wrong, what mistakes you made and what you should have done to make them right. Re-evaluate the whole situation once again and then see if this time you can achieve your goals, what steps you need to take on to reach your goals, what caution you need to take this time not to go wrong.
  3. Lack of Clarity: When we are not clear what we want to do in our lives, or what should be our goals in life, our future looks vague. We like what’s familiar, so we resist what’s unfamiliar and vague and we keep re-creating what’s familiar to us. If you’re not clear about what you want to create, then you’ll lack motivation because you’d rather stay with your current familiar reality. How to get motivated again? Create something different from what you’ve been experiencing, it’s not enough to just know what you don’t want. You also need to know what you do want, and keep a clear and specific vision of what you want to create so that you research, and work towards making what you want to do.
  4. Values Conflict: You surely give importance to your values. But, if you have a values conflict, it means that there are two or more values that are significant to you but you believe that you can’t satisfy all of those values in a particular situation. This situation causes you to feel conflicted and pulled in two different directions as you try to find ways to get what’s significant to you. You might be briefly motivated to work on something and then lose motivation and begin working on something else, or your motivation might dry up altogether because the effort of dealing with internal conflict quickly tires you out. To get out of this situation you need to unpack your values conflict and play mediator. You have to get the parts of you that are advocating for different values to play on the same team again. Start with acknowledging the internal conflict. Once you’re clear on what you really want, you find out new strategies for getting it that you hadn’t noticed before. By doing this exercise you’ll find ways to satisfy all of your values.
  5. Lack of Challenge: Challenge is another factor which can demotivate you. When it comes to dealing with challenges, there’s a sweet spot. If the challenge is big our fear is also big, and if the challenge is too small we might feel bored and struggle to stay motivated. We as human being are designed to be growing and for that we need constant challenges and opportunities to master new skills. Without challenges we can’t progress and lack of challenges brings demotivation. What you need to do is review your goals and the projects you’re working on. Are they enough challenging? Try tweaking your goals to make them a bit more challenging, take on projects that will require you to learn new things and experiment with new things, increases your skill set.

Bottom line is when you feel demotivated, you have to sit down and pinpoint your unique form of demotivation, and start to tackle it in a specific way, and once you have figured out your way you will again feel motivated and energised, and you will start working on your goals.
