The term “Duplex” has been coined for this kind of stainless steel because it consists of a two phase microstructure consisting of grains of ferritic and austenitic stainless steel and combines many of the beneficial properties of the two types which then helps in providing resistance to localized and uniform corrosion. The chemical composition of the Duplex Steel is balanced approximately to give equal amounts of ferrite and austenite in solution-annealed condition. The higher the annealing temperature, the higher the ferrite content in the steel.
