Lyft is Offering Free Rides to Prevent Drunk Driving

Drunk driving is a serious problem in America right now. The amount of fatalities that result from drunk driving is shocking. Rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft have helped reduce people’s motivation to drive while impaired. Before these companies were streamlined across the country, more people would drive home from bars late at night. This is when most drunk driving crashes occur. Young people coming home from bars and clubs on weekend nights are the primary drunk driving demographic. Now, with the convenience of Uber and Lyft, there are less reasons to justify driving home drunk. Still, the issue of drunk driving has not yet been resolved and continues to result in tragedy all across the world.

Now, companies with the power to make positive change are doing so. Lyft recently partnered up with Budweiser for a promotion to lower the risk of alcohol-related car crashes. The promotion involves Lyft offering free round-trip rides, paid for by Budweiser. They will give out 150,000 free rides across nine states in the year 2018. By doing this, both companies are taking steps to be part of the solution to the issue of drunk driving, which has plagued our nation for the past few decades. The families of those who have died in drunk driving accidents, along with other activists, are standing behind Lyft and Budweiser in their attempt to make the roads safer for everyone.

Some may argue that while this promotion is helpful, these companies may be doing it for the wrong reason. While Lyft is a popular rideshare service, it does not have nearly the amount of users that Uber does. This could make Lyft more willing to engage in fancy marketing promotions. Some would argue that this promotion is more of a PR stunt than a response to the shocking amount of drunk driving deaths per year. It could also mean that they are trying to get people who use Uber to switch over to Lyft. By offering free rides, there will certainly be a spike in the amount of people that download Lyft in 2018.

In today’s world, there is no reason to drink and drive. With rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, why take a risk? The transportation cost is cheap compared to the cost of taxi cabs. For people who resist using Uber and Lyft to save money, think about it like this: The cost of going out and drinking is usually more than the cost of a Lyft ride, depending on where you are going. So, before you decide to drink and drive, consider using Lyft first. You will be safer and you might get a free ride out of it.
