Vitamin D3… More Than Just a Vitamin!!

Although we make think we are adequately exposed to the sun, studies have shown that in the US, across all ages, we remian deficient in this essential vitamin. This is a lipid soluble vitamin that has receptors in the body in cells such as the bone, muscles, brain, and even immune cells. It meets the criteria of being a true hormone. Deficinecy in this vitamin can lead to chronic pain syndromes. And pain medications may not work unless this deficiency is corrected. Supplements have to be ingested only as recommended by a physician. high dose can lead to excess calcium in the blood and may cause kidney stones (nephrolithiasis) and other complications. I always recommed statying away from gelatin based pills. I recommend vegetarian tablets. Supplements of Vit D3 should be taken with some calcium to allow the Vitamin D3 to be processed in the cell. Again, all should be under the supervision of a health care provider, as these should be checked regularly in blood work. Dose is in IU (international Units) not mg. Sun shine it is…
