We’ll Be Wrapped Around Your Finger Mr. President

Part II of America Should Break From Its Pact With The Devil

Let’s face it, it is hard not to find the signs of our times sibylline and I can’t help but attempt to find some explanation or draw upon some metaphorical parallel to make sense of our near authoritarian state of confusion and disharmony. It seems as if we all just hitched a ride with this self-proclaimed jack of all trades, Svengali-showman into the abyss.

For those who may be wondering about the use of this peculiar title for this piece, you might have surmised correctly that it is a reference to the song “Wrapped Around Your Finger” released out of the UK in 1983, performed by The Police, and written by frontman Gordon Matthew Sumner, otherwise mononymously known as Sting. It was a song that had no meaning to me at such a tender age, it just had this eerie groove to it that strung you along into this trance like state promiscuously by hauntingly mellow rich vocalizations.

As for the lyrics I didn’t have a clue what they meant. I have played this song close to a thousand times on vinyl, and through a yellow cassette playing Sony Walkman and still couldn’t understand what this Englishman was saying. And the video didn’t help much at all even when I read the liner inserts of the cardboard like album cover way back when. As my brain began to grow, and the song culminated into a classic, I was able to understand better where Sting was going with this song.

In the first couplet verse in the start of the song Scylla and Charybdis of Greek mythology is cited and precedes the song’s ominous chorus line, ‘I’ll be wrapped around your finger’. As I listened to this song this morning I began to liken our onward sail of democracy under the Trump Administration to that of the folklore dilemma of trying to pass through rocky shoals on one side and a maelstrom of eddies on the other during this untoward voyage into the unknown.

I have only come here seeking knowledge
Things they would not teach me of in college
I can see the destiny you sold turned into a shining band of gold

For now Trump has US wrapped around his finger. The one true redeeming quality of this bandit indeed. It is a ring he gladly shows off in and outside of the U.S. He brandishes it as if he were one of the Green Lanterns. He has serendipitously made it into the annals of our history where it counts most. He has ensured us all that his name will be forever etched, as many of us New Yorkers have tried earnestly in jest and in vain to erase.

I then think of the bargain that took place prior to this trip. Where we were sold a bill of goods on where we would be headed — either back to greatness, or making round trips around greatness. There was no trip posted or scheduled towards greatness.

The evil genius in Trump continues to play into an ignorant stream of consciousness — a strange discordant vibe out there that is ludicrously derisive.

Mephistopheles is not your name
I know what you’re up to just the same
I will listen hard to your tuition
You will see it come to its fruition

The benefit of the doubt shows up like weeds in a garden or in a sidewalk crack for Trump. No matter what you do to suppress or eliminate them, they endeavor to come right back and ruin your perspectives of the red, white and blue view of multiculturalism — the concept that created this nation of immigrants and turned it into this superpower today.

To speak of our national exceptionalism — as it were — is absolutely a joke when considering who is in the White House, as well as taking into account most of the elected officials in Congress who put him there — whether directly or indirectly.

Don’t worry this four-year social contract you opted-in for, it shouldn’t be seen as a material breach constitutionally, it should be democratically deliberated as an anticipatory breach of this Faustian bargain with Trump and Company.

This pyrrhic victory will result in consequential losses in the November 2018 elections. The upcoming Supreme Court Justice pick, and its recent ruling to uphold the travel ban grants you as president of the United States the power with all of these pyrrhic victories which tally up mostly as impending losses coming Trump’s way.

Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air you’ll never find me
I will turn your face to alabaster
When you’ll find your servant is your master

You’ll be wrapped around my finger

When the Senate does in fact flip, Trump will find out who he really serves and he will learn in his discomfiture that will wear on you like an albatross. This is how you will be remembered. It will be quite humbling, albeit late in life, and on the biggest stage ever.

So enjoy all the spoils right now, because Mr. President, ‘you’ll be wrapped around our finger’ soon enough.
