Geography

Puerto Rico is an archipelago, located in the Caribbean Sea, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. The island of Puerto Rico is the main island, but the archipelago is home to additional islands, including: Mona, Culebra, Vieques, and several others. Puerto Rico has a total land area of 5,324 square miles and a population of approximately 3.3 million people.

Climate

Puerto Rico has a tropical climate, which is characterized by warm and humid weather year-round. Rainfall is highest in the mountains and Western region of the island. The temperature ranges from the mid 60s to mid 80s, depending on location and season.

Government

Puerto Rico is an unincorporated U.S. territory. The U.S. Congress activated the Constitution of Puerto Rico in 1952, enabling the creation of a local government. Local government is broken down into 3 branches: the executive, legislative, and judicial.

Economy

Puerto Rico has a mixed economy that is heavily dependent on foreign investment and indirect U.S. government financial aid. The island’s main industries are pharmaceuticals, tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture.

Culture

Puerto Rico is a diverse and vibrant culture. There are a variety of languages spoken, including Spanish and English, as well as a variety of religions and holidays celebrated. Caribbean music, dance, and art are widely enjoyed.

CAPA

CAPA (Centro para el Aprendizaje Puerto Rico) is a language, culture, and arts exchange program for young people aged 15–17. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Puerto Rican heritage and culture. CAPA works to provide unique experiences in cross-cultural activities that connect young people from all over the world. Participants in the exchange program will develop and strengthen their language, cultural, and intercultural awareness while experiencing and personalizing aspects of the culture of Puerto Rico.

Programs

CAPA provides a variety of programs that focus on learning the Spanish language, exploring the culture of Puerto Rico, and engaging in activities that foster international understanding. The programs include:

  • Language and culture exchange — This program offer participants the opportunity to extend their command of the Spanish language by participating in activities with Puerto Rican families and cultural experts.
  • Leadership development — This program focuses on developing cultural competence, conflict resolution, project management, communication skills, and entrepreneurship.
  • Service learning — This program provides an opportunity for participants to make a difference in the local community by engaging in volunteer activities and working on community-based projects.

CAPA offers an incredible opportunity to learn about and experience Puerto Rican culture, while engaging in activities that promote international understanding.
