Flow State
The “Madness” is a real thing.
(Watch the first minute)
I remember seeing the Boss man frontside flip the heck out of the big 7 at my home park as a young lad. That stair set was a special one for me. That stair set was special for a lot of us.
As a teenage kid witnessing a true great, that day was unforgettable. I’ll never forget it.
Pure inspiration to young skate rat from the burbs.
The Burbs:
I remember the Christmas lights were real bright that night. They reflected off the dark suburban street as the homes surrounding synchronized in a comforting silence.
This is home base. This is the Burbs.
The air smelt like mesquite. I could feel the chill of mid December Texas fresh on my cheeks. As soon as I opened my parents garage door that freshness slowly crept in from the outside.
I was 17 & that garage was my winter workshop.

With a young bucks gusto I put my wheels down on that cold garage floor & began work.
Crafting, forming, learning, developing, practicing.
This Sui Generis Moment
taught me something crucially invaluable that I wouldn’t become fully aware of until today.
That night in that cold garage I entered the realm of a State like Flow.
Flow can be learned by anyone. You might already be familiar with it. You might already know it.
If you follow me on Insta you’ve probably heard me talking about Mihaly CsikszentMihalyi’s(say that 5 times fast)book on Flow.
What I like about Audible books is that sometimes the authors themselves narrate their actual work. So it’s almost as if they are talking with you.
These often tend to speak to me the loudest.
This one did for sure.
The 1st Element of Flow: Clarity of Goals
In Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s book he talks about the 8 Elements of Flow.
These Elements are characteristics of Flow in which I’ll be diving into extensive depth on our next blog. There is a strong correlation between one’s activity(such as Skateboarding)& what we know as Flow State.
Especially in activities we enjoy. The world of Flow is quite expansive so I’ll do my best to give you my biggest takeaways.
So before we rap this up let me ask you something:
Did you understand the “Madness?”
If so, what do you think it is?
If not, ask me & I’ll explain.
In our next blog we’ll talk more in depth about Flow & it’s principles. We’ll also get wild & talk about what happens in the mind when we are in an intense State of Flow.
Till next time you animals, love yah!
