Two years a cloudgineer: technical debt limbo (Appendix A)

You don’t know me

The business team won’t feel the acute emotional consequences of debt. It’s no fault of their own. It’s just simply invisible to them. Though I have to say, we have some amazingly empathetic folks on our team. I think because we are still small, 25–30 employees in about 1500 sq ft. They overhear our bemoans during standup: when we recount, tight lipped, the skirmishes with unforeseen debt we face in legacy code while working on (what was) a simple bug fix. They are pretty damn attuned. Great to work in STEM. Scientists get this shit — it’s probably the similarities between research and web dev; making something real out of theory, hypothesis; wrestling with the unknown; intimacy with failure, frustration, experimentation.
